I got this from the shawn lane forum on his website www.shawnlane.com (http://www.shawnlane.com/), its a great place for his stuff. If you go there youll find the booklet for this video.
This is the second video, the first video 'power licks' is as good as this, definatly worth buying along with his albums!

I would not have expected that voice out of that guy. Its unfortunate that he passed away, I read that he was hospilitalized before he died, but does anyone know exactly what he died of?

Pecker,
he had several problems with his health, and this had been going on for a few years. The fact that he was rather heavy and also smoking a lot sure didnt help. He did have problems with his lungs, arthritis, and several other problems.
If he had survived, he would have had to rely on medical oxygen for the rest of his life.
Itīs really sad, and he died at a rather young age, too...

Its surprising how long he had been in the music business though, he was saying he had been using the same amp for 30 years! There are videos about from 1981 where hes playing intense runs.

This is him playing in 1980 in black oak arkansas.

Yes, in some biographies it is said that he was "working as a pro" at age 14 or 15, playing in the local club scene a lot. Must have been quite intense to be in a band like BOA at such a young age ( he was 16 or 17 I think )

I hear Lane had some sort of stomach problem, which was the cause of, not a result of his obesity.

Stomach problems only result in indegestion not obesity silly;)
He wasn't HUGE but he was pretty big, more than likely it was a thyroid problem

More than likely he ate and drank too much.

I remember reading a post from Donnie B. (an administrator on SL's forum), who said the cause of his obesity (among other health problems) was not from food per se, but a strong side-effect of a steroid he was forced to take because of a terrible skin disorder.

His arthritis was also caused by the medication he had to take because of that skin disease, I think it was cortizon ( sp ? )
Of course, for a guitar player, arthritis is a horrible thing to suffer from ( actually, itīs pretty bad no matter whether youīre a player or not ). Thatīs another reason why Shawn used Vigier guitars later on. Due to the way they build necks, they allow for a really low string action, which I am sure was very helpful for him

They have an interview where he talks abit about his health here....http://www.richardhallebeek.com/ Its sad how he never got the recognition that so many lesser players are getting today.

Wow. Funny, I just saw some videos of him this weekend. Then it hit me, I remember watching the tele about three years ago and there was this crazy indian folk music with a large bearded guy playing the **** out of his guitar, it was so great. But I never catched the name of the group or the guitarist. Seeing the pics of Shawn with the beard convinced me, it must be him :P
Now I just have to find some music with that group. Ideas?

DracWell, the band you are talking about and the place to get their cd's is here:
http://bardorecords.com/index.html
There are at least 5 or 6 cd's and one DVD of the band with Shawn Lane on guitar
Shawn Lane was the most musicial human being I heard of! Did anyone watch his instructional videos? They are very inspiring but you can't really follow his approaches because he's way to strange but awesome in his playing... The fact that he was a piano-god too and that he had a very big knowledge about classical music, jazz and rock/pop tops his musicianship off !!! He was one of the guitarists who really could change something and bring us to the next step (others are M. "IA" Eklundh or Ron Thal)...
I dig all of his music and he will always be in my mind at or at least in my music!
VIGIER ROCKS ;-p

Now I just have to find some music with that group. Ideas? If you wanna hear Lane and the Indian guys, you need to check out Good People In Times Of Evil and Icon, two incredible albums. Also, the DVD Paris is a very good one, I think that's the performance we saw on TV.
Then there's the music he made with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe, Temporal Analogues Of Paradise and Time Is The Enemy being two great albums. You should also check out his two solo albums, Powers Of Ten and The Tri-Tone Fascination.
If you're looking for bootlegs, or just wanna chat about Shawn's music with other fans, check out the forum here: www.lanesblitz.com

EricIt was inevitable. :o

However, it features very little of Shawn's trademark soloing. His tone is totally different from his earlier days, but he makes it sound very natural. While it's not for everyone, I recommend it to any true fans.

Oh ok. I saw a preview clip back then, I think on the Abstract Logix site... the clip had a quite extended solo by Shawn, pretty much unaccompanied... wild stuff.
I wil have to check it out.
One of the first things I heard Shawn play was that cover of "All Along The Watchtower" (I think this was when he was with the Willies)... he played the first few solos very much the way Hendrix did, but in the main-solo part (where Hendrix used a Bic for those slides, and then kicked on the Wah), he went wild and did some of that amazing soloing he was well-known for.
And there was a really insane, almost eerie-sounding unaccompanied solo-break at the end. You can hear the audience go nuts.
As far as I remember reading, a lot of players that came to Nashville heard Shawn play with the Willies, and that was how some of the buzz about him was created. I think I read comments by George Lynch and Kirk Hammett who were completely blown away by hearing Lane play with that band.
I still have a poster from a 1993 issue of GFTPM, where they had a roundtable with Shawn, Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons, Alex Skolnick and Reb Beach... there was a big Ibanez-concert featuring those guys plus Joe Satriani during the NAMM (I think there is at least one clip around from that on youtube or google-video). Must have read that roundtable-interview a billion times back then...

Yeah, the "...Watchtower" version was one of the big Shawn songs with The Willy's, the soloing being half-Hendrix and half-Lane. I have a few different versions of that one, two on video and a couple of audio takes. The end solo was actually edited afterwards by Shawn, who added the deep octave effect. I have the original, unedited performance, with the whole concert. Same crazy playing, but it's lacking that bottom in the end.
I've put up one version on YouTube. It's missing the solo at the end, though. I edited it out since I thought the tone didn't do the solo justice. This is the one:

I remember working at a record store, and seeing that we had gotten a promotional copy of Powers of Ten in the mail. I had been hearing Paul Gibert talk about him in interviews for a while, so I was very excited to see what all the fuss was about. Long story short, between the 10 minute compositions, and the shredding at the end of Grey Pianos Flying, I almost gave up playing music because it was so intimidating.
