I am new to the forum lots of good stuff here.
My question is how to decide what position and fingering to use when looking at a piece. I have no formal training and am struggeling to get fluidity and speed in my playing. I seem to hit a wall around 90-100 bpm doing either 16th chromatic or scale positions

For playing the Major scale you need the following finger shapes covered:

1 2 3 4 5
i m - p -
i - r p -
i - m - p

those are the main ones. When you start using these you will see patterns on the tab and spot straight away what kind of fingering to use. However, we all have our preferences. 'Kirmet' Hammett of Metallica likes to use his ring finger to stretch for what I would use my pinky for. I personally like to keep my hand as inline with the fretboard as possible so I use my pinky all the time, and the above shapes I keep to those fingerings rigidly.

Now the Harmonic Minor scale. You have two big stretches to do.

1 2 3 4 5 6
i - - r p -
i m - - p -

those are added to the first set, thats pretty big stretch, but is realistic with practice all over the fretboard. Heres a link for scales, you can make your own chart and practice them. Forming your own method.
