View Full Version : Picking Technique

Hi, it's been along time since I posted on here, but I was looking for some help with my picking technique. For a long time I have used a modified version of the technique similar to George Benson or Santana where by you hold the pick on the pad of the index finger with the first joint of the index finger arched and the thumb flat on the pick with the joint locked.

For the most part this technique seemed to work wonders and allowed me to slice through the strings, but I have recently realised that this might not be working so well for me, for example - it makes palm muting a nightmare and as such I changed my picking style back to having the pick rest over the side of the index finger pointing towards the fingertip - although this seems to cause problems picking up the way during sweeps as you need to rotate the entire wrist which seems uneconomical to me, this alongside the fact that this method of picking seems to slow me down in numerous other ways.

As a result I've spent the day noodling with different techniques - thus far I've been paying attention to Frank Gambale - and noticed that he has the pick facing out over the side of the last joint on the index finger. Now - this as Ive found allows you to slice through the strings more effectively than any other technique Ive come across and allows you to achieve incredible speed and control - sadly it seems completely useless for playing rhythm or at least makes it very awkward.

I know this has been a long post, and for anyone who has been kind enough to suffer it, could you please suggest a few other methods of picking for me to try or at least give me a suggestion about ammending some of the techniques mentioned so that they are more effective. In specific the problem of picking up the way on sweeps - it's never been a problem until recently when I realised that by rotating my wrist for the up stroke ( slicing through the strings using the opposite side of the pick ) I was being slowed down.

Thanks alot.

Hey Dude,

I've been going through the same kind of thing, and I've found the exact same problems you're encountering. After much frustration and making little tiny miniscule changes to the way I'm holding the pick I think I'm starting to get to something I can work with.

I found that using the method of holding the pick against the side of the index finger with the pad of the thumb pressing it down is the only way I can mute strings effectively, but now I altered that slightly.

I moved the joint of the index finger down slightly towards the point of the pick (basically uncurling it a little), but still keeping the side of the index on the pick, so that it's almost pointing at the string. It's giving me a bit more precision control, and also allows the palm muting that I want. Coming back up the strings seems a little more natural and if you do need to adjust the pick angle it's easy with your index finger in this position.

I'm still experimenting, but you may want to try in this direction. For me, the change was really small but my speed picked up a little bit over the regular curled index and thumb pad method. Let me know how you make out, I'm interested to see if it's just me or if others have success with this.

Thanks,
Bert

I was just watching some instructional video that Zakk Wylde did, and noticed that he holds his pick very strangely. Is this strange, or I have I just never witnessed it? Does anyone else use this same method, and has it seemed to improve your picking speed at all?

First off, I spent the last few days experimenting with different styles of picking technique although I have finally decided to switch back to a modified version of the George Benson/Santana style of picking and it's working a little better again, I think I was just stuck in a rut for a few days. Tuck Andress has written the most concise article I have come across concerning Pick Technique or for that matter right hand technique. In fact it might be the best article I've ever come across - here is the link for anyone who is interested.

None the less, thanks for the suggestions, I've yet to watch Zakk Wylde play, I'll look out for a DVD at some point. And finally, a different The Dude, the other guy must like the Big Lebowski too.

don't forget to practise down and upstrokes seperately, it helps a lot

Not everyone agrees to what he says in that article though. Just the fact that very few of the best guitar players uses his approach to picking should suggest something.
