how do you harmonize riffs?

im currently in a band and im kind of interested in learning how to harmonize some of my guitar riffs. If there is any rules or techniques that anyone knows about harmonizing please help me. I know nothing about it.

Simply find the chord progression, then use one of the other notes of each chord to harmonize a line.

if you could give me an example that would be great. i don't really know any theory/chords, so if you could show me a small tabature of it..id really apprieciate it.
