I started voice lessons not too long ago and so far I can sing decently. But when I play my guitar it feels like my voice is trying to accompany itself with the guitar, when I would prefer it if the guitar would accomany my voice. I can keep up with the songs I play find, its just my voice that sounds horrible along with it. When I practice singing with my voice teacher, she uses the piano and I sing along to it decently, same without an instrument, its just my guitar that is a whole other story. My guitar is tuned standard and I'm a barritone according to my voice teacher, but I can hit a few tenor notes. Is there a certain way I should tune my guitar to my voice? How do I solve this problem? Thanks!

You can tune your guitar maybe 1 or 2 steps down and transpose all the chords to your vocal range

How high can you go comfortably?

I think it just might be that you can't play and sing simultaneously yet.

Your posture and all that vocal technique may suffer too because you're focusing too hard on playing the guitar...

Um... be sure your guitar is intune. I'm not sure what level you're at, so forgive me if I seem condescending.

I'll try tuning my guitar half step down. I can definetly play and sing at the same time, I just have trouble matching my voice to my guitar like I said before. As far as how high I can go, I'm not really sure how to answer that, I'm still learning about this stuff. I'll keep at it.

Are you playing and singing in the same key? That's a must. Get your teacher to tell you which key you sing in --- then that's what you accompany yourself in.

I sing in D so when I sing I'm using the key of D for the chord progressions (D, G, A with Em and Bm). I find that a few songs are best in G, so with them I'm using the key of G for my chord progressions.

Every vocalist has a favorite key I think you just need to find what your's happens to be. You say you are a barritone, try D and see if it works for you.

you have to practice the song of just make sure you are very familiar with what your playing, once you do this you should be able to focus more on your singing instead of focusing on the guitar
