Here is what we use:
C…………………………G
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
…………………………..C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
……………………………F
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ______________,
………..C…………...…G …C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
Strumming patterns....... It's over so fast and everyone is singing ...... whatever you feel like.

I tried using the chords below. It sounded strange. Doe you know the strumming. Is it just straight up down, up down. Or down down up?
Thank you.
C…………………………G
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
…………………………..C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
……………………………F
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ______________,
………..C…………...…G …C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
I'd align it as follows:
...........C………………….G
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
………………………….......C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
……………………………........F
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ______________,
………...C…………....G …C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU
Just to get yourself started try alternating between 1/8 up and 1/8 down on every beat, so that on "BIRTH" you do go up & down and on "DAY" you strum up & down again and so on.

It's in 3/4, so I'll guess an easy way would be down-up-up...

haha, i expected to open this thread and read about the birthday (beginning) of chords and some crazy musical history. That's really funny, 'cause that's how I got here too.
But as long as I am here..., I've never really played this song before, but did you all miss a G7sus4 just before the F after "dear"? Sounds like it needs to be there.
C…………………………G
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
…………………………..C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
…………………………..........G7sus4.....F
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR some - one,
………..C…………...…G …C
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

Alright, so nobody liked the joke. But, how many of you actually tried to squeeze that chord in? If nothing else, I'd bet a few of you learned a new chord.
