I don't know if this the right forum but hey, I detune my guitars a full step down to help my voice but the strings get too loose sometimes causing a buzzing sound. If i get heavier strings will that make it better? I've seen the Ernie Ball Beefy slinkys, are they designed for this kind of thing? Hope you can help.
Cheers
Jack
It could go even worse with heavier strings (depending on your guitar, especially if it's acoustic) so I'd say you'd rather try transposing the song to a different key both to fit your voice and string action above the fretboard.

Beefy slinkies are good, but they are fairly large for just standard D. I would suggest 10-52 (eb orange) or 11-52(dean markley mthb), though I would suggest the eb orange for d. These work good for me. I tune a maj 6th down (C# standard) and the mthb give me the right amount of treble string tension and good bass string tension (though I personally would prefer a little more).
And of course these recommendations are for a 25.5 scale guitar (strat, stratish guitar). If you have a shorter scale 24.75, you might need something heavier string wise to keep tension up. Maybe everly Xrockers, 11-56.
