The first way would be correct. I have video (from Hot Guitarist magazine) of them playing this tune and that's exactly how he plays that part.

Indeed. I saw him play it backstage at a gig while talking to his roadie, and he indeed played it in open position. Great chop-builder.
By the way, you could try to learn both versions... good exercise

You might be able to find those vids on Ebay somehow. I don´t think they´re sold in stores anymore. It was a rather short-lived series of vids, like a guitar magazine on video. Had some great interviews and rare footage

Well, Paul Gilbert is on the cover of vol.2 and Morse is on the cover of vol. 3. That should help you decide!

I grabbed those VHS videos when they came out...found them in a local music store back in the early 90's. Good stuff; too bad it didn't last long.

Just listening the vol 3 and its not the video...Maybe the volume 2.....
