Hi, Im just curious as to how most people approach pedal tones like that found in Paganini's 2nd Caprice. Im getting close with alternate picking, but its quite a job to get it spot on. I was thinking maybe to use free fingers for picking, and have the plectrum take the lower notes. How would Jason Becker do it, or someone of that calibre? Thanks for your time...end communication :D

I like to do it using an outside picking motion on the strings. I find I get more clarity and better tone to the note that way.

Still AP though but just getting over the strings to get to the outside.

You could economise the motion for adjacent strings and go inside AP, or use an EP method but I think attack would suffer.

Outside pick AP would be the way to go for me.

I have no idea how Becker would do it.

I use outside picking too, or if the pedals were too many strings apart, I would use pick & fingers (because I suck when it comes to skipping from the bass E string to the treble E string :p).
