I always find that practicing simple exercises helps with technique, the dvds by rusty cooley are the best, Basic training, which is alot like Intense rock one in the exercises and also Shred guitar manifesto, which has a huge legato workout. The workout focuses on strengthening the fret hand, if you keep at it you'll find that playing normal scales at high speed becomes easy compared to some of the dimminished style fingerings of the exercises rusty does on the dvd.
Speed kills is also great to.
But your playing seemed to be good, its not an easy song! Also you may find that your alot better at legato then alternate picking, so you should check out videos by richie kotzen, greg howe and allan holdsworth. You may just need to look at other techniques before deciding which is yours.
