Hey. I think this is my first post here but ive been reading everyones posts for a while now.

I started playing the guitar in december. I kind of want to start learning how to hybrid pick. Do you guys think that learning how to hybrid pick is a waste of time, or is hybrid picking a better way to pick when you actually know how to. let me know what you guys think. thx

Hi next slash and welcome to ibm! Hybrid picking is good because it makes some string skipping licks easier to play. You get much information about it if you use the search function.

IMO hybrid has some benefits, it mostly deppends on what direction do you see your playing evolving... I, for example, am a pick only guy because the tunes I play are, for me, the most convinient with a pick. But I've seen many great players use hibrid, they mostly played country, blues and fast jazz. Afterall I believe that you can choose the technique that is most convinient to YOU be it hybrid, fingerstyle or thumb picks... Good luck.

Check out Albert Lee. One of the best. He can play Chet Atkins style with his pick and the remaining fingers are banging out chords. It takes some practice.

One way to practice is do like a 1234 on each string and use alternate picking . Between each note pluck the high E with your index finger and/or middle finger.

IT's tricky but if you can master that exercise...

Hybrid picking is a great technique to learn, i learned to do it off a CD by a rockabilly player cant rem his name will come back to me. Still havent totally mastered it but can do some stuff, I got into James Burton style for a while and it taught me a lot about it. I still cant incorporate my little finer but can use 2nd and 3rd fairly well, Trying to get the alternate bass thing is possibly the hardest part for me. best of luck with it

It's another tool in the toolbox. For most people it doesn't replace anything, but it sure does open up a lot of doors to interesting musical ideas.

hybrid picking is almost like finger style with a pick right? What's the difference between that and chicken picking?
