Check out Strictly Alternate Picking thread in the Strictly forum.
Check out the Etudes section of articles there's Eric's version of Moto Perpetuo and a Mike Campese etude there. Couple of short "party pieces" there that'll do no harm to your alt picking.
Of course for pure exercises there's a whole ton of specific picking articles here too.

Eric's got A.P. pretty much covered. If the motto perpetuo thing is not enough, check his picking articles (the art of picking series and his work out series) there's also a real cool Paul Gilbert feature with a ton of EXCELLENT picking exercises (I am still working on those myself).
Good luck,

I'd agree with forgottenking that eric's got alternate picking covered, and would like to add the steve morse article are worth checking out especially for alternate picking what most players would sweep as you don't usually see that done and it helps a lot more with crossing strings than most exercises would.
Other than that although its not metal I suggest you check out some of the alternate picking nylon string acoustic players do. A good place to start is friday night in san francisco by the guitar trio (al di meola, john mclaughlin and paco delucia). Some of the licks on that are somthing else and make excellent exercises if you want to improve your picking chops.
