I have a question about how one would go about using the whole tone scale. I already know how to get the "dreamy" sound out of it with sweeping, but I don't really have any knowledge with improvising over an augmented chord progression. If anyone has any licks or suggestions they wouldn't mind sharing, it would be much appreciated

Thanks

You can try a pentatonic type run that uses those tones for instance:

e------------------------------------------------
b---14b(16)-r(14)-p-12--------------------------
g-----------------------14-p-12-----------------
D---------------------------------15-p-13-p-12--
A------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------

Or something like that. I've found those work quite well without it sounding like you are just going up and down the scale (even though in this one is exactly what you are doing).

Good luck.

Due to the symmetry of the scale, repeating patterns are especially effective. Work out a short 2-4 note idea and sequence it (move it up or down) by 2 frets (a whole step) or 4 frets (a major third) at a time. Also due to the symmetry of the scale, each note of the scale sounds equally good (no avoid notes), so feel free to move around the scale freely and start or end on any note. So long as you resolve to a good note on the next chord in the progression, it will work out ok.

do an augmented sweep shape over the 6 tones lol

for example

e-------------------12h16t18p16p12----------------
b----------------13-----------------13-------------
g-------------13----------------------13-----------
d----------14---------------------------14---------
a-------15--------------------------------15-------
e-12h16-------------------------------------16p12-

then just move that up and down the tones of the scale
(E F# G# A# C D)
