What are some picking tech. for playing neo classical violin licks on the guitar?
how do i change my picking and why please?

If i take violin licks off classical composers like bach, paganini etc. and play them on the guitar it doesn't sounds the same i have to change the way i pick or something the articulation if taking licks from violin concertos

Neo Classical guitar basic theory
1.) uses phygian dominant scale
2.) uses diminished scales
3.) uses tritones
4.) Harmonic/melodic minor scales

What else? does Neo Classical guitarist use?

Have a look at some picking tabs for some of the neo classical players.

I don't think there ia ny hard and fast rules, violins are played with bows but in general I see up and down stroking of the bow as an equivalent to our alternate picking technique.

But there are a finite amount of ways to pick and it's a question of applying them when it's most appropriate for what you are trying to acheive.

I always think starting with alternate picking is the best way to go. between AP and sweeping you should have it covered for most scenarios I would think.

Oh.. and if you have the picking part done, add some rock'n'roll to it, put the books aside and have a blast. :D :)

You got to add some pentatonic or blues to it or its stone cold scales.

Brent, I'd actually suggest you send the Great Kat an e-mail on the subject as she was a classically trained Violinist before a Guitar player, so if anyone could tell you how to transpose violin technique to the guitar I would say that she's more than qualified!!

Here's a couple licks you can work from. The first one is a symmetrical diminished run from "Enemies of Reality" by Nevermore and the second is from Yngwie Malmsteen's "Trilogy Auite Op.5". It's an easy descending harmonic minor lick played using alternate picking.

Neo classical doesnt use pentatonics?

So i guess richie and yngwie arnt neo classical then....lol

Yngwie's a guitarist like he has said many times, not a violinist. So he plays the blues and mixes classical with hard rock, its the smartest thing. And of course the minor pentatonic is just an arppegio with an added 4th anyway so it fits perfectly into neo-classical music.
