Hi Everyone,

Yes, I am raising a just turned 15-year-old son by myself, and am looking for ways to give him support and advice in his quest to be a guitarist/vocalist. I hope I have come to the right place!

Hi Nancy! Yes, I think you came to the right place.
I believe being a good musician pretty much boils down to tenacity. You have to practice every day, practice hard and improve your playing with every practice session. Then, once you are any good, you have to practice even harder to become great. WHile youre at it you have to be tenacious enough to try to make a living out of it. You can be the best musician in the world and not make a single cent and get discouraged quickly for being unsuccesful. So, I guess what I'm trying to get at is,, if your son wants to do this for the long run he should:
a) get lessons
b) find people to play with
c) keep in mid it's probablly easier to be a neurosurgeon
d) have fun
e)never stop working hard

COngratulations Nancy, youre a rocking mom willing to stand by your kid! Best of luck and if you need any help, just ask!

Some guitar forums seem to generate critical and put down replies to questions by new members --- This one does not. As mentioned earlier you can turn him loose here and not have to worry about that.

Thanks for the thoughts. Probably like many musicians, my son is having a hard time "fitting in" at school, and doesn't see the point of most of his high school classes. No matter what the future holds for him, I think that having a passion and pursuing it is the most important thing for him right now. It seems that if nothing else, playing the guitar teaches one tenacity, and the importance of sticking with something, since the pay off by practicing is fairly immediate.

I will definitely direct him to these forums.

Great choice Nancy. Now one thing I do recommend is you try to get yourself a teacher to guid your son through his learning process. That, plus this website will more than get him on his way.

I recommend you read this article on choosing a teacher:

all the best and I hope we can be of help!

Wish he could realize that. To him I am the silliest, most annoying person in the world. Just how I thought about my mom. Oh well. Little do we realize what our parents are doing for us.

I have to think of a way to direct him to this forum where he won't reject the idea just because it came from me!
