View Full Version : Angling the pick Gilbert style?

Hey everyone,
I'm curious about something. Recently I've been making slight changes in my technique and from what I've researched articles say you should angle your pick.

I know there are advantages to both angling the pick and keeping it perpendicular to the strings but right now I'm experimenting with angling it. I know Paul Gilbert promotes this type of picking technique and there's no arguing that he is probably one of the most precise alternate pickers out there but my question\problem is this. Everytime I angle the pick in this manner to slice through the strings I hear a slight whistling sound. Has anyone ever experienced this while holding the pick in this way? Is it because I'm not using the very tip of the pick? Is it the type of pick perhaps? I use a 3.0mm short Jim Dunlop stubby pick. Or am I angling it too much? I saw a video clip of Gilbert demonstrating this technique and the angle he holds the pick is very pronounced. Any ideas?

Thanks,
TaZ

I prefer going as flat as possible...it might be the pick i use, but i get scratchy soounds when i do downstrokes with an angled pick...plus, i prefer the tone a perpendicular pick gives me...rounder, fuller...that's just my opinion, i guess...

Some people like that sound - I think David Chastain picks that way cuz theres a clicky sound I like when he picks. If you use a sharp pick like the dunlop sharpie 1.5mm it wont make much difference what angle the pick is - Dimeola uses sharp picks but alot of people dont like them cuz they are a little harder to balance with like high heel shoes.

I have used sharp and dull picks both alot. Or do you mean the shoes? I have a strange idea that there isnt really a such thing as men or womens clothing - those are imaginary concepts - I wear womens suede boots with 3 inch heels cuz I like the way they make you seem taller. Your name looks christian - have you ever heard of Sacrament? Thats a christian thrash band. Their guitar player is one of the best I ever heard. I dont know his name. I think he should do an instrumental cd. I like alot of christian metal no one has heard of but should have been more known.

I am a christian, but the name comes from lamb of gods first album (technically their first album with that bandname). And sacrement is the name of the latest album by them. I am working with a christian death metal band right now, and have been putting some metal/death coreish stuff down right now. Haven't heard of sacrement the band though.

Cool. Sacrament is kinda like slayer but the guitar player plays neoclassical and cromatic scary things like slayer both alot in the same solo. Their from australia. I always liked the death voice on "Scrolls of the Megolloth" by mortification.
