This is a 16th note repeated pattern from the main solo of fade to black by metallica, i was wondering, how would you stop the barred notes on the 12th fret ringing into each other, would u just simply barre them and use your picking hand to mute them, or would u rapidly roll your index finger off and on?

Rollin' is the deal..... ;)

It's just a little, controlled and constant back and forth movement with your 1st finger.

Rolling is what keeps it clean. Of course it would be good to practice certain licks like this at a slow speed to make sure you are even and clean. Or if you can stretch your hand out, use hammer ons and pull offs. However, when you do that it tends to lack that staccato feeling that you get with the changing of the strings. Most importantly, just dont look at it as it is written, look at how it is and how you can change it to find your style. You can hear someones style even if they are playing the same notes as everyone else.

Well, yeah rolling would be the correct or appropriate way to play that part. However, you can also cut the ringing by muting the string with your right hand, something that get's better with practice kinda...
