View Full Version : Layering guitars

Hi All,
Messing around with my multitrack once again.......
I layered like 4 guitars here, Main riff doubled up then a simple chordal version piking out the chords played with a bit of agression.
Then I picked out the 'key' notes and found like a very simple arpeggio which I played clean with a bit of chorus. Then I recorded an acoustic guitar playing a slight variation.
Mixed em all up togeather with a bit of reverb and then searched for some nice melodic themes as a lead. Was so tempted to do harmony parts but I resisted ;)
I put some quick bits in at the end but I didn't really want to do quick bits for the sake of it.
Used quite a dry sound and backed the gain off which I have found works a lot better in cutting through and improves the tone.
Anyways, have a listen and if you want to ask any questions fire away.
Have a great weekend all

Very nice Daz.
You get some great clarity across those layers.
The clean guitar with chorus is that stereo?
I like the overall vibe, but i think you could pan the layers a bit more to widen the soundstage. It was all pretty central.
Having said that, like i say you get some great clarity across the layers.
Me like!
Any chance you could post the backing without your solo for me to have a crack too?:D

Hi Russ,
Thanks for your comments
Yeah, I should have panned them really to thicken things up more which I will do next time - do you know I totally forgot to do that
Trouble is I monitor everything through one of those Mini-Marshall stacks (you know the ones that stand about 3 foot high ?) so its hard to get an idea of the panning effect as its mono.
I will dig out the backing track/s and email them over to you
Have a great Sunday dude

I've been experimenting with some of this 'puter recording recording by overlaying tracks. I get a good sound in mono, but the thing is, whenever I try to pan an instrument to one side, the sound gets real thin. Anyone got any tips on panning in a digital recording?

Strange... There shouldn't be any loss of volume or quality simply by panning. That's the beauty of digital after all. Maybe a playback problem? Speakers?

It will "unfatten" the sound depending on
The tone of each track
The eq
How far you panned the tracks
What exactly you recorded
I would say run four tracks. I usually do three different amp/cab settings when I record
Sound one panned 90 left
Sound two put at 60-70 two track on left and right
Sound three at 90 left
Usually minor differences between one and three other than cabs, sound two has a different eq and cab. I might post some soundbytes tomorrow or tonight if I get a chance. I will see whats up

AH LOL
I did a multri track sampling of the tones/panning I usually use when recording, but then forgot which forum I was going to post it on:rolleyes: . Will upload once I get home.

Sounds good. I think the key is panning, tone and musical space.
Try out a sterio expander on master out and running some of the smoother stuff through a tube imitator effect to bring it out a bit and yeah playing dry gives a whole lot more space for other instruments but also careful use of compression to give an instrument its own space is important too I think.

Thanks Russ, you got me on the right track here. That got me to plugging in some headphones and other speakers to troublecheck. It wasn't the speakers, it wasn't the software or playback settings, or the way I was panning, it was a bad soundcard.
Easy replacement BTW. First time I ever replaced a computer part without screwing it up. I was thinking this was going to be an all day ordeal of frustration as usually happens when I open up a computer, followed by taking it to someone else begging for help.
Yes it is working very well now, in stereo, huge difference. Thanks.
