The metronome is a valuable tool, that will allow you to improve your musicianship, and your ability to play in "time" to a beat, rhythm, etc.

ask any musician what is one of the top priorities of a musician?

answer: to be able to play in "time" to a beat, rhythm, etc.

IMHO if you choose not to use the tools at your disposal, tools that will contribute to you becoming a better musician, than it is likely that you will struggle with advancing on any instrument where playing in "time" is a necessary requirement,(meaning just about all civilized music, from the monks, to bach, to modern day).

so just because some musicians CHOSE not to use the metronome as a valuable tool for becoming a more complete, competent musician,

the real question should be-why would a musician not use a metronome as valuable learning aid?

Man, I practice with a metronome, I was just curious as to whether Yngwie did. Yngwie is a fag by the way, and supposed "muso's" on this board are far from that. They, are, tech heads. Peace out

Half term (school holidays) is here !

You can tell that by the posts :p

Wonder how long it will be until we have the 'arpeggios flowing like water' or the 'I'm 12 years old and play better and faster than malmsteen' ;)

Ah you must mean forum member 'neo shredder'!!!!! Those were the good ole days.

<sigh> I miss neo shredder. He posted some cool licks, even though he wrongly took credit for them.

I don`t know if yngwie used a metronome or not, but i never heard him say he did. I know superduper guitarist Mattias ia Eklundh didn`t use that and he plays alot of hard rythmic things(he is a zappa fanatic). The metronome is great but i guess you can still learn to play great without it.

, I think someone needs to lay off the sugar and caffiene a bit. :p

But to give my 2 cents on it anyways I think you can play "in time" without a metronome. I think however you need something to keep time in order to play with it like a drummer for example.

One neat trick I like to do with my PODxt Live is put on some echo/delay and keep time with it to have some fun with intervals.

@ the malmsteen things

Didn't he used to play violin? And if Im not mistaken his parents or some family members were classically trained musicians. I have yet to find a classically trained musician that doesn't use a click of some sort.

Whether or not Yngwie used a metronome, i don't know, but he has said, that he was "fanatic about playing in time and in tune," and that he would punish himself when he didn't. I guess he must have had some means of practicing time.

I'm by absolutely no means a Malmsteen fan, but I read an article he wrote in a guitar mag once, said he started (like anyone else) playing blues-rock stuff after seeing hendrix burning his axe, and didn't get into the neo-classical until later.
I think that was him.. anyways.
