I've been listening to a lot of classical music, and I've heard a lot of pieces with names such as "12 variations on Mozart's sonata in A minor" and so on. I listened to these and noticed a lot of tempo and key changes, but sometimes its hard to really hear how it relates to the original melody. I was wondering if someone here could explain or recommend a website or book that explains how writing variations work. I'd really like to try to take some of these elements and bring them into my own songwriting.
