Hi all,

Here's a question I would like your comments on :

As I have been recording myself alot and varying the tempos of the backing tracks I have found that there are some comfortable and not so comfortable BPM's.

Like 150-160 is cool as you can play triplets and sixteen note triplets and also the 4/4 eighth notes and sixteenth notes....vibrato seems to be easier to keep in time too at that speed.

But as you slow down...say to 120 - 130 its harder to phrase, triplets at that speed seem to sound too simplistic as do 4/4 eighth notes. Also its tougher to keep your vibrato in time.

I find it more difficult to keep things interesting and 'creative at a slower tempo.....it just sounds 'too simple' to me.

Anyone else find this ?

Agreed.

I mean I find timing a problem at the best of times, but I have a very narrow band at about 135 to 145 where my timing is pretty good.

Faster than that and I can't keep up. Slower than that and the timing problems are highlighted.

I guess this is where gnome time can really help. Particularly as you say with the vibrato at slower bpms.

I do cheat a bit now though as I tend to record into Live and use the timestretch function to move the BPM to where I want it on the whole backing track. Sometimes 5bpm here or there can make the world of difference.

I'm kind of fond of the 100-120 range. Especially for grooving, time sig changes, and polymeters. However for the faster stuff I'd say 200-240. Pretty much just double of the other speed. Its a good speed for death metal. Now to find a drummer that can play at 200-240 with out dying...lol.
