Just wondering if you could get the same speed laterally picking on a single string (like a bass player) with all four fingers compared with alternate picking. I'm still amazed at guys like Knopfler who even though they use a lot of legato play fast finger-style.

Classical players can get loads of speed using only three fingers and the thumb. Check out some of the tremelo pieces like Recuerdos de la Alhambra to hear some really fast picking effects. Another piece that will blow you away for fingerstyle speed is a video on you-tube of a chinese girl playing paganini's caprice on the classical guitar.

OK, I have already posted this link in another thread but you gotta see it. You will probably need broadband internet, or just wait for it to load...gotta see it.. The lick he does at the end is cool.

that guy is great, thought he ran on quarters till that high bend near the end.

saw the movie, deliverence, and yes, had to have a banjo.

i learnd alot about finger picking since there are no distractions such as sustain or distortion, tone etc. or any other relations to guitar music that will make the mind wander off.

strickly coordination for both hands. and unforgiving on mistakes.
did it help on my guitar playing? yes.
