Hi Dawson,
and welcome to the forum.
Your soundfile sounds pretty good, especially considering you have been playing for only two years, well done.
Maybe you wanna share your recording setup ( did you use harddisk-recording, which software etc. ) with the members of the forum, cuz I think this might be an interesting thing to discuss...
Also, why don´t you share some more information about your musical interest ? ;)
Warm regards

I agree - well done and good recording .... it does have a nice feel / mood to it. Reminds me of some Baroque style guitar music.

My only point of critique would be rhythmically - as this is a solo guitar performance it is immensely important to give a listener a clear presentation of the underlying meter. Otherwise a listener gets, well kind of ‘lost’.

You might wanna record the tune with a metronome and see where you can be more freely in terms of rhythm and /or where you have to make sure that you present the rhythm in a clear way. Furthermore, you could think about adding dynamics, maybe start soft - end loud or the other way around ......

well done!

Pretty good! Classical isnt quite my thing but to my ear (the part i could hear trough my tinnitus) that sounded really nice.

Those are good suggestions, and very valid in all areas of playing. regardless of a solo performance or playing in a band... When I listened to a piece, I ignored the tempo more or less and considered a free tempo, "rubato"-style performance.
I have often heard rock players do classical pieces and varying the tempo quite a bit in between, which sometimes added new life to the piece itself- like a version of "Tears In The Rain" that I heard Joe Satriani do, or Alex Masi´s version of Bach´s Toccata in D Minor...
But you are definitely right about the metronome / strict tempo-part...

cheers for the suggestions, ill re-record tomorrow :) (busy tonight). Trouble is, the beat changes alot (4/4, 5/4, 6/4 i think there's a few more) so it would make playing with a metronome a bit awkward. Ill have a go with anyway and see how i get on.

Hey eric, I've got just a mic hooked up to my computer and used that. Just stuck it infront of my acoustic and played :) I use cool edit 2000 to record, its got some handy plugins to clean up background hiss etc but it can kill tone sometimes. Neat program though if u want to know more let me know.

About musical interests, I listen to all sorts. I guess im into blues more than anything else. Ive been listening to a lot of jeff and tim buckley recently and ive also been checking out some robert johnson and ry cooder.

If I had to name some fav bands they would probably be -

radiohead, tim buckley, bob dylan, nine inch nails, hendrix, and zeppelin (there's lot more though, too many too name ;))

How about you, what music do you like?
Cheers,
Dawson

Well, I just figured it would be interesting for many members to dscuss homereording-setups. For demoing I use a Preamp plugged into the computer, software is either Cubase 5.0 or an older Wavelab-Version. It brings some really cool results.
Just tonight a student of mine asked me whether I could record some lead-guitar over a song he had written, and I just used that setup to record some licks for it really quick.
For demoing, example licks for artiles etc. this is a great setup. ( The MP3-files I provided for the Sweeping-article have been recorded with that setup )...

Oh man, that actually is a tough question becaue there is so much stuff... I actually started playing because of Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen & Jimi Hendrix, but these days I listen to so much different stuff... I love rock music a la Van Halen, Fusion a la Ritenour & Carlton or CAB ( MacAlpine, Brunnell, Chambers ), even Country Music, some classical stuff, big band jazz, Zappa, a lot of different stuff.
CURRENTLY I am listening to a lot of Steve Morse / Dregs again, also the aforementioned CAB-project, Jason Beckers beautiful "Perspectives"-album, some older Pat Metheny stuff ( Like the "American Garage"-album ), and some contemporary country-stuff... of course that list would be all different again next week... :D

How about the others in this forum ?!? Let´s hear some recommendations !

Hi,
yeah, Sardinas is cool. I saw him live when he was opening for Steve Vai. If you like what he does on his album, you definitely have to see him live, cuz he is a great performer, he really is entertaining and plays with a lot of fire.
Maybe he´ll come to the area where you live soon...
Warm regards

Oh that would be great but... :) i don't believe in that. Possibility to see him in my country is so small ... nobody comes to us :( except scooter and similar :)

Yeah, Sardinas rules. I also saw him opening for Vai in Belgium.
At one time he just got off stage and played thru the audience, shredding with that bottleneck..was nuts! After the concert he just walked thru the concerthall, talking to everybody!

After the show I got to meet Mr Vai himself, another modest person!
