fade from clean to distortion?!?!?!?!

Ok, I was listening to Open Your Eyes by Alter Bridge, and I noticed during the bridge the guitar sortof "fades" or "swells" into distortion from a clean tone! Its crazyness! how is that done? i've heard of using volume pedals or "actuators" or something to acheive it....any one know? I wanna be able to use this technique!!!!:confused: :confused:

Well, they could be playing their dirty channel and then turnin down the gain and when they wanna hit the distortion they could just turn up the gain....that may work but i really don't listen to that band so...eh, mess with it.
