After hearing Van Halen's "Poundcake" and PG's drill song, I would like to know who invented this first and how its actually done (does Ed hold the drill over the Pickup or what?)
Thanks

Drills are hardware related.

Yep, that's how it's done.
Afaik Gilbert did it first... as their cd "Lean into it" with that gimmick on "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" came out on 26th of march in 1991.
Van Halens CD "F.U.C.K" came out on July 17th in the same year.
So i think Eddie might have thought.. wow sounds cool, lemme try it on our CD as well. Could be wrong though.
In the end i don't think it matters anyway who "invented" it.

Paul did it first on "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy" as well as on many of his live guitar solos and he actually played with the drill. Eddie used "just" the sound of the drill at the beginning of "Poundcake".
On a funny note...Paul played the fast tremolo picking part of "Eruption" in some of his live solos...with the drill... :D
Anyway, of course it doesn´t matter who did it first (well said Sven) since both are guitar legends who are beyond any comparison. I´m not even sure Eddie knew about Paul doing it first so...
If you wanna see how Paul really did it check out this link:
