I got a drum stool that is a little too high and it's starting to cause me some back pain. I play with one foot on a classical foot stool and play classical position half the time and the other half however i want. I don't think I could practice much longer than 2 hours without a great deal of discomfort.

I saw Petrucci with a practice setup of a bar stool so that he is almost standing.

I'd like to hear what works so that I don't have to buy furniture that ends up not working for me.

Although originaly trained to play classic guitar, I alway stand when playing electric. Since I rarely have time to play more than two hours, it works for me all the time. And iF I had more than two hours I would take a break.

Well for me it's an adjustable office chair nearly all the way down for Guitar & Bass and nearly all the way up for Piano needs some tweaking to find the right position ,& make sure your feet are flat on the floor. Normal chairs are mostly a disaster ,very bad design on the whole ,I don't think we're actually meant to sit ,our bodies are not designed for it. G'luck.

You just made my day! Glad to see I do something like Petrucci.

I use a tall stool -- if standing all I have to do is back up to it and the height is just right -- to just sit down. That's my gig stool, most of my practice is done in front of the computer on a no arm computer chair.

The good ol' office chair huh? I had one but it's pretty beat on. I guess that's the way to go. I may try to find a good tall stool though. I like the idea that you're basically standing. It means you don't have to get up every time you need a new book or have to press record. But then the music stand has a lot further to fall

I use a super customized baber chair for this purpose! :)
I used almost a whole week fixing it. It has really straight and stiff back. Then there is a cup holder and pedal board built in. It so cool, and it's pink! :D

And I use these footstand

I use an armless office chair with an adjustable height and back. I never really adjust the height, but the back I move almost all the way forward for playing with a classical and flying V, and it all the way back with any other guitars. I've been trying to figure this out for over a year and a half, and finally I've found the perfect fit. An armless office chair with an adjustable back is the oracle.

I usually sit on my bed...or it's an office chair, although the arms make it very annoying!
