Just wondering what the best fingering is (most efficient)for the arpeggios in the string skipping etude in this powertab (Paul Gilbert's Terrifying Guitar Trip, example 7). This is keeping in mind that I don't have Gilbert's freakishly long "ET" fingers. :)

Hi there!
Lets look at the first two bars of that. Id play the G on the high E-string with the ring finger (you might consider using the pinkie, up to you), and of course the index finger for the E. Then, on the G-String, pinkie and index. The E on the D-string Id fret with the middle finger.
Then back up (same fingering), and for the E, G and A on the first string, Id use index, ring and pinkie, respectively.
Bar 2; Pinkie-Index; Pinkie- Index; Middle finger; back up to the B-string, and then the pinkie for both the C# and the D (14th and 15th fret)...
Does this help?
I use the same approach Gilbert uses for fingering choices... he said once that he really doesnt have a set rule when to use the middle- and when to use the ring-finger,m it always depends on what he has played before. To me, the fingerings I listed here are what I would use and might not work for everyone, but I consider them rather efficient, and if youre used to using the pinkie, they might work just as well for you
Hope this helps!
Eric

PS: And good to hear from you =)

Hey thanks Eric! I think I'm going to do a little experiment and just learn it using every possible fingering combo, to see which is the best one for me...Hey man, I hope you caught the latest G3 with Petrucci, Gilbert, and of course, Satchmo. It was effing phenomenal man...I'm going to see Vai on his new tour in Toronto...From what I hear, it's just amazing with the new band members...and apparently, he plays some songs he doesn't usually play on tour like "Tender Surrender", "All About Eve", "Lucky Charms" etc....Yowzers!!! Hope you've got tickets!! Thanks again, bud!
