Ive done some real good fast playing by only listening and imagining but it dosent always work for obviouse reason. Im super advanced with my left hand but I am still somewhat new at alternate with the wrist - I picked alot of years with economy with the elbow. So Ive noticed I can also play really good if I focus on moving the fingers fast and the pick follows subconsiously and its faster and more relaxed than when I focus consiously on the right hand. That is more reliable but then Im not listening much cuz your consiouse focus is limited like your vision is limited. How do fast shredders focus whilst shredding? Do you get so good at some point that your focus is on both hands and listening too? That might be cool. Ive mostly been playing the first 4 songs on Rising Force alone cuz I can keep up with one lick but not the next so I cant play with the cd yet.

Lot's of shredders sounds like they do not listen to what they play... that would be like unconsiouse?
sorry, I just had to say that :D

hehe or if you drink too much wine. a little buzzed can be good for shredding and i dont understand why but alot is really bad and youll play really funny sloppy things.
You're always better in the unconsiouse, but you can't fake that. You can't focus on "nothing" deliberately. Just try relaxing and working your speed up slowly. Soon enough you can play all those four songs.
The fact of the matter is that shredder's don't concentrate on what they are doing. It's almost like they have a brain in their hands. But you have to keep some focus on what is going on. The muscles remember because they have been trained to follow the mind and it's commands. As you get some years under your belt, you will find that the pathways of the mind have been built so well that you have no need to focus intently. That is because everything that is needed in the mind and muscle, are now hard-wired. Built in with the struggle and the discipline. Less focus is needed because the program is "tapped on" by "trigger's" (circumstances recognized by the mind). By relaxing as you play, you tapped on the trigger's by recognizing that you want to play.
Your..., "Hard-drive" commands the program to initiate the hard-wire commands, and you go to an automaton mode. But you still have to keep the program on in your mind, or you will lose your "control".
So in all, you have to be conscious and unconscious at the same time. You can't lose your focus.
