I have to sit at the PC for 8 hours a day at work - are there any stretching or other exercises that might be worth doing? i can't do anything "weird" like the gripper type devices as I have to present a fairly professional appearance!

i'm quite open to arguments either way as to whether exercises away from the guitar are worth doing at all - does anyone have any opinions or exercise ideas?

There is a video called finger fitness. Its quite old, one of my teachers showed it to us a while back. It involves lots of finger movements and patterns that you can do while your sitting around doing nothing. Some are quite complex but they are really interesting and cover just about any kind of hand movements you would use as a pianist/guitarist/horn player ect...

here you go, I found the guy on the video :)

wow! that is impressive, they need to invent a new instrument just for him.

i like the video - there is plenty of food for thought and just the basics of finger independence could be relevent, let alone the more complex stuff.

I couldn't live without my chinese excercise balls. They are amazing for warmups and you won't believe how deeply you can learn about your self awareness with them. I use them for about 10 minutes before i play in both hands and it warms you up all the way up to your elbow. If you want to stretch do it after you warm up with them and after you practice. The chinese balls sell for about $5 on ebay or any chinese cultural area.
