...by Paul Gilbert. The intro riff is the main problem. I just started working on this tune...After the main intitial riff when you slide up to the seventh position and do the little palm muted sextuplet run, your pinky ends up on the 10th fret of the A string, but then you have to very quickly start playing the next riff using your pinky on the 10th fret of the D string...Do you just sort of roll your knuckle until it's flat and almost barring the A and D strings, or do you just shift position quickly or what? The other part I'm having difficulty with is the part after that riff where you do the sextuplet palm muted riff in the third position after sliding down and your pinky ends up on the 7th fret of the A string. I find it's difficult to get back in position for the initial riff, as the ring finger used to play the G on the 5th fret of the D string is hovering over the 6th fret after the sextuplet lick...a very awkward manouvre...any help? thanks

My fingering for that triplet thing would go 1 2 4 - 1 2 3 and don the C with the pinky alone...can be a way, i think...good luck with it.

If your working from a tab, or even a transcription book. The positions provided aren't always the best ones. So play around with changing position at different points in the line. If worst comes to worst, you can always change that part of the riff/lick to suit your playing style. Joe wont mind I'm sure :)

The tab is out of a recent Guitar Techniques mag, and there is a vid on the included CD Rom showing Paul playing the song, and using that exact fingering. Who's Joe? It's a Paul Gilbert song...

Oh, I thought you were describing Joe Pass looking down from the heavens and stuff.

I don't know. I'm strange in the head.

Nevermind.

Check out the intro to Terrifying Guitar Trip and see what Paul's doing!

When I learned that long a while back, I never barred on any particular string. I always use the individual finger/string attack. At the time I was practicing that song, I was already very comfortable with finger shifting, and worked extensively on getting my pinkie trained just as well as any other finger, so it really wasn't a problem..

Slow it down, even if it is painfully slow, and practice the correct technique.

Bar it :), for the second sextuplet run, PG uses 1-3-4 for the sextuplet (on both strings) so the ringfinger is already in position for the G. If you use 1-2-4 (which I do) just fret the G with your middle finger for the first time and then switch back to your ringfinger.

Hi there!

I don't bar this part, I just quickly move my pinky down to the G string.

Just play it the way that you feel comfortable playing! ;)
