Can anybody play these efficiantly without sliding? I have tried both ways, and sliding seemed easier at first oviosly, but I am wondering if I should develop not sliding, will it be more efficiant and faster mybe. all the players that use 4 nps patterns use the slide technique such as allan holdsworth. I have never heard or seen anybody do it with no slides, so im wanting to hear from anybody if it is a good technique, or if it is not possible to develope? anybody use it? thanks

OF COURSE it is a good technique, fella...it increases your span around the fretboard like you wouldn't believe...a great tip i can pass along is to lift your fingers from the fretboard as you reach the fourth note...don't keep your fingers stuck to the fretboard, it makes it difficult....

You can always check my article about combining 3 and 4 nps sequences, you'll find great info about 4 nps ...just click the link bellow and don't forget to write a comment about it...

Ok, but is it realistic to play with all fingers on a fret for improv? I'm sure its good for practice and stretching the fingers... Are there any famouse guitarist examples that play liek that... I know a couple of guys who use 4 nps pattern like Holdsworth and Brett Garsed, do they slide? or do they "not slide & use 1 finger per fret" when using 4 nps patterns?

Possibly some people play that way. Take the easy rout though. Unless one particular method actually sounds better, why bother? if the sliding method achieves a good result use it.

Thats my mindset anyway. As guitar players we have enough hurdles as it is, if something can be simplified... Do it.

One big name within this technique is Rusty Cooley with his enourmous hands. He does that technique without sliding and it's ridiculously fast, I've never seen Rusty improvise acutally but I know he uses it in solos alot.

Cheers

Brett does slide his finger....to actually get 5 notes on the string!!! Holdsworth also plays a lot of 4 notes on the string WITHOUT sliding...and his runs are nothing less than other worldly....pretty insane stuff, it's hard to cope with that sort of things....

Well, okay, that is a bit extreme, but you get my point.

Nothing wrong with your long-windedness Blutty, at least you always make a valid point at the end of it unlike others (not here) that seem to spout just for the sake of it!!!
