I can sweeep OK with upstrokes, but with dowstrokes my hand automaticly tries to alternate pick arpeggios. Should I cure that? At current speed limits this seems still to be satisfying technique. But it looks like it would hinder the speed improvement.

I would say you should. I mean you are missing out half the sweeping motion and also the more common one. I mean its one thing if you like the effect that approach makes and you are doing it for that 'sound' but otherwise i'd include the whole range of motion. Besides the upsweep is the best part!!
