Hey
I need help with fingerpicking. Specifically that regarding picking patterns. Should I allocate my thumb for the low E and A strings then the index for D, middle for the G, ring for the B, pinky for the high E? Then as for fingerpicking scales, I am totally lost on this. Any help will be most grateful.

kind regards

That depends entirely on what fingerpicking approach you choose. The most common are the clawfinger or American approach involving your thumb to pluck the bass strings and the index and middle fingers for the higher strings, and the Classical approach which uses the thumb for the bass strings and the index, middle and ring for the higher strings. The pinky may also be used additionally.

As for scales, I've seen many use the thumb as a pick, in an alternate picking fashion. There's another technique involving the use of the thumb and index finger in alternately, in sequence.

Hope this helps.
