So, after practicing downpicking for a while I have just become curious as to if it is normal to mildly tense up just as you strike the string and have the tension in the arm go away immediately after. It is something that I can't seem to shake free of.

Ok I'm not sure which way to take this post, depends on your meaning of the word "tension"

The post could be taken as

1) Tension like, when your arm normally moves? "Hey guys like when i'm about to move my arm and pluck the string, my arm moves and plucks it, is this normal" (lol)

2) tension like, your arms are sore from practicing downpicking too much? (take a break)

3) tension like, muscle spasms or pain? (see a doctor)

You do need to have some tension to apply to the string before plucking it. after you pluck the note you should relax the right hand and the pick inbetween the strings also. I have a Jamie Andres video where he mentions how to execute a proper Downstroke/Upstroke.

1. Hold the pick relaxed (not gripping it too tight)
2. Pick then rests on the string (relaxed).
3. Then you add slight pressure downward on the string w/ your pick (just enough)
4. Pick the note, relax after picking, travel to the next string floating the pick in between the next string (i.e. Picking once from E-A pick you would be in between the A and D string) repeat.

If when you're doing this exercise you notice your stomach, shoulder, leg etc. tense up while doing this then; stop. do the exercise but focus on eliminating the bad habit through relaxed practice. If you tense up. stop and repeat. until you build a habit of relaxed playing. :D Later
