He really is screaming into his pickups. he started doing that as a joke, trying to look as if he is playing with his teeth, then singing lines into it that would be impossible to play that way.
same with the looper pedal, which has a sweep lick saved in it, and he uses it to make it look as if he sweeps with his teeth. A lot of people dont get that joke and accuse him of cheating... =(

by the way, thats a clip from the "Mr Big live" video, recorded at the Warfield in SF. I bought that shortly after it was released, and i love it (the CD too). Awesome performances, incl. a cover of "Baba O Riley".

Well, if a pickup is slightly microphonic, it can act like a microphone, thats one example. you have to speak into it very loudly though. considering you dont only hear the strings but also when you i.e. tap on the pickup or the guitar body, the pickups pick up more than just the sound of the strings anyway.

As in "screaming", you know... if you watch that guitar solo video, he is really yelling in there big time, and it will not work with every pickup.
And there is this old GFTPM interview, a roundtable with Paul, Shawn Lane, Alex Skolnick, Reb Beach and Andy T., and in that one, Paul explains why he started doing it. Its a fun read, its from a 1993 issue.
