I've heard the term "bedroom guitar tone" used and I was wondering, would the only way of me knowing if my tone is good is to record myself? Also the guitarist from Coldplay blends in perfectly with the piano, bass and drums can someone explain in detail how to achieve overall good sound and tone quality in a band? (without stepping on each other LOL) Thanks!

recording yourself is great for tone and technique but be carefull that you use something that plays things at an accurate speed and good sound quality. ive always thought the more effects and distortion the less you blend in cuz its muddy. also mono sounds more articulate in a band than stereo .

A good band, like you said, does not step on each others toes, and it takes a long time playing with each other to achieve this. I play a lot of 4 string and one finger chords as the lead vocalist also plays acoustic guitar -- so I go up into the higher range to stay out of his way. I leave the bass notes to the bass guitar, and as he does a lot of bass runs I let him do them and I do not do runs - nothing worse than having two people doing runs that are not together. It's those little things that a band learns from playing with each other. How .....

If you are still in the bedroom don't worry about it right now, not much you can do with tone - your guitar has a built in tone all its own if you leave the amp controls in natural. After you have played with the same people over a period of time you will learn how to stay out of each other's way.

And remember those bands you spoke of have a full time sound man blending each of their sounds.
