Hey guys, heres a question that has haunted me for long.
On a few ocassions ive seen some guitarists and some bass men too, "pulling" or "dragging" natural harmonics. Say a natural harmonic on the 7th fret and then slide their fretting finger up or down the string without fretting and changing the pitch of the harmonic.
How the heck do i achieve this? Hope you can help me out

hey man,
if you know how to do natural harmonics then you know how to do this trick. you just barely touch your finger to the string and move it up and down the string (still barely making contact) while hitting whatever rhythm you want with the pick.. this makes the most cool noise with high gain.. :D there are a bunch of natural harmonics besides the ones generally used and they don't always occur right over a fret so while your picking the string and moving your finger you hitting a bunch of harmonics, your hitting areas near the harmonics so they don't sound clearly, and your hitting areas that are just making random noise.. of course you can time your picking and finger movement so you only hit the true harmonics but those random noises are cool too.. hehe... a bunch of guitarists do this but Dimebag and Andreas Kisser (or however his name is spelled, the guy from sepultura..) come to my mind right now... look up a diagram of all the natural harmonics, there are all sorts of cool notes hanging around.. I think Satch had an article in a mag a while back that included a cool little harmonic diagram.. alot of the more obscure ones show up clearer on wound strings, one of the many reasons I like a wound 3rd string as opposed to the standard monosteel..
anyways.. hope that helps..

Hey Wyll, thanks for the reply....:) but thats not what i mean. Ive seen guys just play 1 natural hramonic and pull it up without plucking the string again, using the same vibration from th 1st n only attack on the string.
btw, the satch article on harmonics rocks

oh!!! duh, sorry man! I know what you're talking about now. I do this sliding up from the 5th fret harmonic to the 7th sometimes.. more gain helps, but I can pull it off on acoustic as long as the initial pick stoke is pretty hard.. you just have to have a light touch and do the slide pretty quickly.. I think it's something you just have to screw around with until you get the right ammount of pressure.. I don't use that technique much since I just usually change the pitch of a harmonic using the wang bar.. it does look kinda cool when you do it though..

oh, what players have you seen doing this? I can't remember any right now..
