Gosh I didn't know there was an age involved in this. Man if there is then we're all in trouble. I don't think you ever stop learning and that includes technique

As long as you are playing the guitar, you are developing your technique.

As for me, I worked on my technique for the first maybe 10 years of my playing. I was a shredhead I guess.

Now I just play, and by doing that, I am still working on my technique, even though it might not be my intention.

Also, you will feel when you get to a point where you are confortable enough with your technique, and you won't think about it too much.

You never really finish learning technique. There's always something else to learn. It's good to set goals, e.g. playing scales at a certain speed, learning 6-string sweep picking in the minor scale at a certain speed, etc. But once you reach those goals, you'll just keep setting new goals, and keep learning.

On the other hand, if I played as well as Steve Vai, then I'd be less concerned about learning new technique, and concentrate on making new music. :)

You might be thinking about technique in the wrong manner...

You'll always have to work on technique no matter how long you play. Once you get to a certain point it still takes work to stay at that level!

Think of a sandcastle. You build it up and the waves keep trying to wash it away or the sand dries out and crumbles. You have to work at it to maintain it, and you can keep adding on to it so it's a bigger castle!

Paul Gilbert's sandcastle is probably a million feet tall!:D
