when changing scales from one key to another on the fretboard, other than lookin at the root on the E or A string what are the other methods?
I hope that question makes sense

This is an open ended question!
You should know the scale degrees of every scale you know how to play. Let's say you know 5 ways to play a major scale. In each fingering you should know which note is the Root, no matter if it is on the 1-6th string (or 7th for the 7-stringers out there!). You should also know all the other scale degrees, but it's best to start out simple and gradually increase your knowledge.
If I give you any note anywhere on the guitar and say "play scale XX with that note as the root" you should be able to do it, ascending or descending, across the strings or lengthwise on one string.
I'm not saying this is easy, but I think it is absolutely essential for everyone that wants to play "lead guitar";)
It's been about 20 years since I "learned my scales" and I don't think about it anymore. It might take a few months to get this down pat!
