We have just built a 1k mono system. Its rough but our first. To go with it we have a second hand Matrix P1000 power amp.

Do we need a pre amp to work it?

Hard to answer, what would you be inputting?

To control input levels. Example: Microphones line levels need to be adjusted (compressed, boosted, etc) to balance with other types of inputs. A preamp, among other things, would do this.
