For a while now, I've been trying to find a "style guide", breaking down the GENERAL differences among the different styles; rock, metal, classic rock, jazz, blues, funk, etc. Since I still have yet to find such a thing, I figured I'd put one together myself (hopefully with your help). I figured it would be a good tool for not only the beginner/intermediate guitarists out there but for any others looking to start playing around with a new style. It should also be a good resource/guide to help your improv in that particular style. I was going to collectively peice together all the good info/links/samples from all your posts and put together one master list broken down into seperate categories and then eitehr post it in here or throw it up on the strictly forum. I was thinking about listing the most commonly used chords/chord changes, scales/modes, times/rythyms, sound (reverb, cleaner vs dirtier, etc.), techniques (whether it be more empahsis on slides, bends, double stops, fast pentatonic pull offs, etc.). I know that it obviously all varies from musician to musician/band to band and it's tough to generalize -I'm just trying to get at the variables that you come upon more frequently (or the definitive characteristics if you will) in each style. I don't know if you guys have any other insights or anything else to add, but please share. Sound samples would be great too, whether to demonstrate typical strumming patterns or a specific technique. I'll post what I've found so far a little bit later but feel free to add in the mean time. Thanks!

I figured I'd put one together myself (hopefully with your help). Great idea. That's quite a task, but it would surely be something I would like to see. I know that it obviously all varies from musician to musician/band to band and it's tough to generalize -I'm just trying to get at the variables that you come upon more frequently (or the definitive characteristics if you will) in each style. Thanks!Give me an example of where you are heading, and I'll try to add something on jazz. Malcolm is the right guy for country and more...
