Hi
I'd like to share my ideas about rhythm within one beat. I know it might sound strange but read on and the approach is pretty straightforward though quite mathematical. you can play it over any scale patern or a single note.
I have been working on this method for quite some time and similar based exercises are going to permanently influance my way of playing rhythms in shredding. But here it is :
I would recomend everybody this exercise :
1/ Set your drum machine to about 70 bpm
2/ on first beat you play 7 notes
3/ on second beat 6 notes
4/ on third beat 5 notes
5/ you go down till you reach 1 note per beat
6/ last 8th beat would be rest, scilence
this way you will learn to appreciate these different feels of deviding a single beat including the rest.
you only stress the first note of each group.
count notes this way :
1 - wa, 2- two, 3- thre, 4 - fo, 5- fa, 6- sey, 7 - sev,
I mean, use only first scillabels of the numbers, so each mumber has the same length as the other notes within the groupings
you may find that alternating 5 and 7 note groupings ( 5 are more spreat out than 7 ) will have an interesting pull. or 5 and 3 or try start with one note per beat till you reach 7 notes per beat
I also do 9, 11, 13 notes per beat or two beats
I hope somebody will understand this and find it useful.
And of course, playing only one note per the whole exercise wont please you for long so I would also recomend to find a riff or loop with notes of various pitch for each grouping. ( playing phrases with scales )
