Hi there guys,
I havent been here in a while and i was wondering if there are people out there who would like to share some 4 notes per string pattern. I tried to create some of my own, but i really need some basic stuff just to see how people use 4 NPS pattern and what are the possibilities that comes with it. Usually, i always go for 3 NPS, but now i'm getting a bit pissed of using 3 NPS cause its so common. I Know i can always play with it in a way that it wont sound so "common", but im also searching for something new and maybe something more challenging. Any ideas ?

Hey there,
check out the ptb-file attached to this post. It has a few basic 4NPS-runs.
IŽd recommend to work on 4NPS after you made sure you definitely squeezed everything out of 3NPS. Using 4NPS requires ( but also can improve ) good knowledge of patterns or the fretboard itself... it can be confusing at first to leave the familiar 3NPS-patters, but you can get some cool sounds.
The first 2 licks are based on a "3 notes on one string, 4 notes on the next"-sequence, and this kinda run can really get you from the lowest to the highest areas of the neck quickly.
The next 2 have 4 notes per string.
And the final one is a PG-style run. Feel free to continue it up to the high E-string, or make up a descending version.
You might wanna use slides to reach the highest of the 4 notes on the string... people like Brett Garsed often do so, cuz he has rather small hands.
People with bigger hands or the ability to stretch can try to actually fret all notes, which might work great for repeating licks on 2 strings... if you play 6 string-runs, slides make sense since you gotta shift positions anyway.
Guys like Rusty Cooley use 4NPS a lot... especially on the upper strings.
I guess I should work on an article about some 4NPS-ideas, huh ? Gee... the list keeps growing.
Hope these ideas will help you out for now... thereŽs way more you can with 4NPS, especially if you add techniques like tapping ( which enable you to do 4NPS-stuff with pentatonic scales... CRAZYYYYYYYYY STUFF ! )

Thx a lot Eric this really helped me out. If you wrote an article on 4NPS I'll be the first to check it out! Keep on rocking!

you can try chromatic passages... it improves your picking, fits onto any chord and sounds definately sweet
