I just recently learned this technique and it's fun as hell.

My problem is that I'm unsure how best to mute strings I don't want to sound. my right tapping hand is either too far off the strings or close enough to make them sound.

I've played violin for about 6 years before I started violin so I got this technique in about a day. ;)

I should find a muting position eventually, I was just hoping somebody could give me some advice.

Hey,
I love tapping too. Well I hope this helps you out.

If you're tapping with just one finger on the high strings, rest the heel of your hand (the part just above your wrist, I think that's what it's called) on the idle strings.

On the low strings, I rest my first finger across the unused strings, kind of like a bar only not fretting.

For muli-fingered stuff, I've found that using my fretting hands first finger to mute the adjacent strings (the ones directly next to it) works pretty well. When doing it on lower strings, just rest your first finger across the unused strings like I said ealrier.

I hope that made sense. Remember, what works for me may not work for you.

Thanks for the advice. I gave it a try and it is helping.

I'm testing out all different positions so eventually I should find the perfect one.
