Hello

I have an Ibanez 7-string and I was wondering how to apply chord theory to it. I can play chords with the roots on the low E and use the low B to add lower harmony. But because there is a G string instead of an F# you can't do a barre across all of the strings with the root on the low B. Any suggestions for sites, books, videos, or your advice is greatly appreciated.

One way to explore that would be to do a few practising sessions on playing intervals ( thirds, fourths etc. ) and triads ( maj, min, dim., sus2, sus4, different inversions ) on the lowest three strings.
Try to figure out the possible chord shapes, try to memorize and apply them. Strum those triads and also, arpeggiate them.
Your goal is to look at the 7 strings the same way you look at 6 strings... try to see patterns and chord shapes on those 7 strings.

I would recommend checking out the web (amazon etc.) for books on 7 string guitar. You might find them useful.

Check this out:
At the "Vault" of www.jemsite.com, you can download the 7-String instructional booklet that came with the Ibanez Universe years ago.
It includes some 7 string exercises and ideas by Steve. Download is free, the scans arenīt too good ( kind alow resolution ), but if you can sight-read a bit, you can still re-create the TAbs in that booklet.
Check it out here ( go there and scroll down till you see "Ibanez Universe 7-string Instructional Booklet"
