I use the above fingering but find it awkward
to do the 9p7.

I'd use my pinky instead of third finger:

6-7-6------

1-2-1-4-2 (fingers)

This pattern is very common with VH and PG, among others, and that's how they usually play it too.

I would play this with same fingering as Bizarro and I suggest
that you release at least some tension of first finger.

You need not to lift your finger of the string as this might cause
some unwanted noise. But for ease of movement and playing you
should always ease the pressure from all fingers that are currently not involved in playing notes.

I would release tension slightly with my first finger. I would also mute the string slightly with my pinky when I hit the "9" on the adjacent string. This combination helps me get a cleaner sound.
