I am looking for a way to get controlled feedback, besides using one of those Fernandes sustainer or Sustainiac sustainer pickups, and without really having to turn my amp up loud. Maybe a pedal or something? Do treble boosters etc. do this? Will the new Seymour Duncan pedal do this???
Thanks for any advice
umm, best bet is an ebow. they aren't cheap though, $75! if you have money to blow, do it up.

Get close to your amp (speaker), theoretically you want to be between the nodes (vibration = 0).
Your string needs to be close enough to the speaker to vibrate from the sound of the speaker. With some practice you can turn your guitar different angles and get different harmonics of the note to ring. This is mostly because the string is at different distances from the speaker when this happens, since the string is at a different distance different notes are louder where the string is. You generally need a good bit of gain/ overdrive to cause this.
If your pickups are not potted well you can get microphonic feedback which is the coils of the pickup vibratting, this is usually not desired.
You can mess with your tone control and change the feedback note a quite a bit (especially on a single coil type pickup).
Wah pedals are very useful for tuning this in to the right resonant frequency. Chorus and delay if used sparingly can enhance the effect as well.
