I tried searching the archives, and couldn't find anything. I need 3 octave scale patterns to learn. I would also like 3 note per string 3 octave patterns (is this possible?). Thanks,

Six

I thought the guitar fretboard was limited to 2.5 octaves...

Do you have an seven string guitar?
If so, than yes you can play three note per string patterns and get exactly 3 octaves. (Seven notes in a typical diatonic scale * 3 octaves = 21 = 3 notes per string * seven strings)

Otherwise you need to learn different types of scale systems to accomplish this.

What do you mean its not 3 octave? Maybe I am mistaking something here. If I do an A min run, start on 5th fret E string and I would end up 17th fret, e string? Isn't that 3 octaves???

How can three notes per string complete three octaves?
6 strings * 3 notes = 18 notes ( You need 21, actually 22 to repeat the root)
Unless you are playing more than three notes per string you are not playing every note of the scale through three octaves.

Hi,

To clear up some confusion. I asked first for 3 octave scales. Then I asked for 3 oct. scales w/ 3NPS and asked if this was possible. I see that it's not now.

However! I do know you can play 3 octave scales on the guitar??? Thats what I really want are 3 oct. scales to practice.

Thanks,

Power Tab for that Fret Board Pattern , which has a raised 7th so it borrows from Harmonic Minor(*9*,10,12, on the B string)

6String,

Check out Satch's book, "Joe Satriani Guitar Secrets." It has the fretboard and fingerings for the 7 modes and other exotic scales in 3 octaves plus lessons on how to apply and improvise with all this. Great stuff!
