Hey my name is steve and im new to this forum, i've been playin a little over two years. I like to play alot of shred and death metal.

I have a question thats been bugging me awhile. i like the sound of low tuned strings, but i like the feel of thinner strings for when you solo. This has been constantly tugging my brain for a few weeks, so if you guys can help me out that would be sweet.

Hey Steve ,

Yeah , strings , can F- up your nut , if your not careful , and then you'll have a busted nut , but not the good kind .
So , try to stick with one Gauge. Custom gauges are cool. Light top heavy bottom . You can order 'em by the dozen at string-this.com or some where similar.A nice .46 gauge for the E,can be cool..
I find this custom gauge good for Drop D ,and low tuning.

.46
.36
.26
.15
.11
.10
The .10 instead of a .9 is because .9 break to easy . The .15 and .26 are so you can still bend the silly Sh!# ,out of the D an G ,yet still have the .46 and .36 to sound heavy.
Each string pulls some 6 or 7 pounds of presure, so D tuning the throws the other strings off slightly .
Tuning the whole guitar to D then dropping the low string to C
can sound real good ,if your into Drop D, I don't know.
Some people tune all the strings down also . To get that" Death Scream Bloody Gore "sound , or Sabbath "Into the Void" it's up to you.

I'm not 100% sure I know what you're asking. I interpret this to mean that when you tune down, the thinner string are too slack for good soloing? If that's what you mean, you could use a heavier gauge set of strings from bottom to top, and still tune down. The heavier gauge will produce more tension in the string so that you can tune down without having so much slack.

Thanx spin for the advice. i appreciate it. Danster what i ment was, i like the sound of low tuned guitars, but i like the feel of 9s as well. see, i have an ibanez 520qm, it has a 25 and a half inch neck. so the 9s can take on a whole step down. But i was thinking of maybe putting tens on so i can go to C# or C.

try ernie balls skinny top heavy bottom, they are nice. they have 10's on the top, and if you down tune they will be just about right
