For small club venues especially, I wonder if there are some amps that seem to be more prevalent than others for the jazz guitar folks. Has anyone noticed?

At one time the Roland Jazz Chorus JC-120 was used by many jazzers including methany. Some of the older guys use Polytones.
I think Wes used a Fender Twin.

Went in to the guitar store today and was salivating over the Mesa Recto-verb combo. The sales guy was telling me how incredible it was, until I told him I was interested in jazz guitar and that kind of sound. He said no way--this wasn't the amp.

Anyway, he pointed me to the F-series Mesa, a little F-30. We plugged it into a second 1x12 cabinet and who babeeee--that puppy sounded real, real nice. Doesn't have the shiny knobs, tho, and the same $$ buys a Fender Pro-tube Concert, a 4x10 that's phyically bigger, and therefore more appealing :). Haven't seen one yet to listen to.

I kinda hate amps. Do we prefer 10" to 12" for any reason?

There is a local jazz guitarist in my area, whom I like to see when I get the chance. He uses a Clarus 1 preamp, which is a solid-state 300 watt preamp/amp originally designed for use with acoustic bass guitars (I believe). He runs it through a Mesa Boogie 1X12 closed-back cabinet, and it is just amazing! In fact, at one show he was playing with another guitarist who was using a Fender Twin, and the Clarus just blew it away (in terms of overall clarity, warmth of sound, etc.). A few other jazz cats like Jimmy Bruno are also using the Clarus. For a good review, check out the August 2002 issue of GuitarSessions at: www.guitarsessions.com/aug02/index.html. Cheers!

That link didn't quite work...even though it's a valid URL. I just went to the guitarsessions site then navigated to the August 2002 issue of the magazine, then finally went to the Acoustic Image web site.

This looks like a pretty cool amp. Solid state, rave reviews, one kilobuck. Pat Martino says buy one. Not a bad endorsement, I'd say. Oh, and 300W. Thanks for the tip. Now if they just produced a rack-mounted version, I'd be telling my daughters to take a semester off at school so I could buy one.

That link didn't quite work...even though it's a valid URLI edited the post above - now the url is working. When someone writes a URL followed by a full stop the full stop will be included in the link which leads to the error.

Yup, had that problem too once or twice... just leave a space after you typed the url, between the actual URL and anything that might follow
